Start with observation
Before brushing, look at stance, eyes, nostrils, swelling and general demeanor.
Hands find what eyes miss
Run your hands over legs and body for heat, filling, tenderness, scabs and changes.
Clean equipment
Dirty brushes can spread skin problems between horses. Assign or disinfect equipment when appropriate.
Groom before tack
Grit under saddle or girth areas can cause rubs and discomfort.
Notice patterns
Repeated soreness under tack deserves a saddle-fit and veterinary conversation, not just thicker pads.
