Body Condition Scoring for Horses: A Practical Owner Walk-Through

Why the scale is not enough

Two horses at the same weight can carry very different fat and muscle. Body condition scoring adds context to weight.

Use repeatable areas

Evaluate the neck crest, withers, behind the shoulder, ribs, loin and tailhead. Long hair can hide fat, so use your hands as well as your eyes.

Track trends, not single impressions

Photograph from the same angle monthly and record scores. Gradual changes are easier to address.

Muscle is different from fat

A horse can be overweight yet have weak topline, or lean with good muscle. Training and nutrition goals should separate these issues.

Ask for professional input

Veterinarians and equine nutritionists can help if you are unsure or managing metabolic disease.
